Upcoming events and news

Greetings! With the EA Global conference starting in less than a day, there is no lack of fun, exciting, and impactful EA things to do. August is the last month before the start of a new year of university, and with it the last month before the start our next intro program. We can hardly wait!

Greetings from EA Global!

EA Finland has a 6-person strong lineup of altruists attending EA Global San Francisco – one of our biggest international excursions yet! The Bay Area is one of the biggest EA hubs in the world, and there is bound to be a lot new and valuable connections to be made, job opportunities to sniff out, and perhaps even a friendship or two to be formed.

Now is a good time for everyone to apply for upcoming EA conferences! EA Global is happening in Washington D.C. (23–25 September), and more beginner friendly EAGx conferences are happening in Singapore (2–3 September), and Berlin (16–18 September). If you get accepted make sure to ping one of our organizers to get added in their respective group chats on Telegram!

Gather.town game night August 4th

Did you know there is a virtual EA co-working space and lounge on gather.town? There is, and joining other EA’s around the world for a co-working session or two can be a blast.

However, the saying goes “work hard, play hard“, and this time it is time to unwind and play for once ❤️ Join us for a fun evening in the EA co-working lounge on gather.town to play codenames with EA words, and other online board games.

Make sure to check out the post on EA Forum on the space, and join us online on August 4th 18.00 here.

EA Finland x EA Estonia Suvepäevad summer retreat August 19th

The EA Estonia Summer Retreat (Suvepäevad) will be open to Finnish visitors! The event is held on August 19th 12.00–August 20th 16.00 in the Estonian countryside (carpooling, trains and buses from Tallinn available).

Urmo is looking forward to welcoming us again to enjoy the summer and good company. At the event you can talk about charity, listen to presentations and take part in workshops. You will also have the chance to enjoy a sauna, different fun activities and you will get to know each other better!

If you would be interested, let Vesa know and we will send you an invite to the Facebook event. Just RSVP on the Facebook event and you should be all set :)

If you don't use Facebook but want to attend, please give Vesa your email address and Rikhard from EA Estonia will send you an email and a sign-up form. It may be possible to receive financial assistance, especially if your participation depends on it. Do not hesitate to ask if you would need it! You can get more info by sending a direct message to Vesa (vesa.hautala@altruismi.fi, also reachable through Telegram @Vesa_Hautala).

Weekly article reading group continues

Every Monday at 18.00 at Oodi Library in Central Helsinki a bunch of EA's in greater Helsinki area gather together to discuss articles that relate to effective altruism and different altruistic cause areas. We would love for you to join us! Here is a link to our Telegram group with discussion and info on the current articles.

Organizational updates and smaller events

Effective Altruism Finland is currently looking into creating our first in-real-life co-working space in Helsinki. What should it look like? What kinds of amenities should it have? What would make you super excited about utilizing on a regular basis? Keep tuned, and let us know what you think.

Open event applications and other time-sensitive stuff

Future Academy, the incredible (and free) five month program aimed to equip university students and early-career professionals from anywhere in the world with the thinking, tools, and resources they need to pursue ambitious and impactful careers (along with mentorships and a 10k in funding for the most promising project ideas) is still accepting applications for their program that starts in September in Sweden. If you think this might be something you would be up for, we think it would be fantastic if you would fill out the application form here!

Center for Applied Rationality is going to run their revised rationality workshop in Prague after a three-year long hiatus, fill out the application here.

That is it for this time! We hope you enjoyed the very-hastily-written-in-the-middle-of-conference-trip-on-a-random-public-wifi newsletter! ❤️

Keep on rocking,

EA Finland organizers team
